What KFC and QSR Franchise Paving Standards Actually Require
J. Worden & Sons is a KFC national vendor and has paved QSR franchise sites in 12+ states. Here is what franchise paving specs actually require and why it matters for your property.

Why Franchise Paving Is a Different Standard
Quick-service restaurant franchise owners deal with something most property managers do not: corporate image standards enforced by field operations teams and periodic facility inspections. A cracked, oil-stained parking lot is not just an aesthetic problem — it is a franchise agreement concern.
KFC, McDonald's, Chick-fil-A, and other major QSR brands publish paving specifications tied to their facility standards. J. Worden & Sons has operated as a KFC national vendor for years and has delivered franchise-compliant paving across 12+ states. Here is what those standards typically require.
The Core Franchise Paving Requirements
Surface Condition Standards
Franchise brands maintain image standards that include parking lot condition. Typical requirements:
- No potholes larger than 2 inches in diameter
- No distortion (rutting) in drive-through lanes greater than 1/2 inch depth
- Line striping that is legible and meets parking lot design intent
- Drive-through queue lanes clearly delineated and in maintained condition
Drive-Through Lane Specifications
Drive-through lanes receive concentrated vehicle traffic — heavy delivery trucks, constant drive-through traffic, and repeated braking and acceleration stress. Most franchise specs require:
- Minimum 3 inch asphalt surface course in drive-through lanes
- Heavy-duty aggregate base (12 inches compacted) under lane areas
- Proper drainage designed to move water away from the facility — standing water in a drive-through lane is a safety and image issue
- Smooth, rolled transitions at building aprons and curb cuts
ADA Compliance
Federal ADA requirements are not optional and franchise inspectors flag non-compliance. Required accessible parking spaces must be maintained, and access aisles must be free of encroachments and level to within 2% cross-slope.
Restriping Intervals
Most franchise operators need full restriping every 2 to 3 years. Faded or missing striping creates customer confusion and creates franchise image issues.
