Hardscaping and Paving: Why They Are Connected

Retaining walls, concrete patios, walkways, and outdoor structures are not separate from paving — they are part of the same drainage and grading system. A retaining wall that redirects grade affects where water drains. A concrete patio near the house affects impervious surface percentages and stormwater routing to the driveway.

Getting the hardscaping and paving designed together — or at minimum coordinated — prevents conflicts that require expensive corrections later.

Retaining Walls in Virginia: Common Applications

Driveway slope management. Many properties in Chesterfield, Powhatan, Goochland, and the hilly areas west of Richmond have grade changes between the road and the parking area. A retaining wall at the base of a cut or at the edge of a fill holds the grade change stable, prevents erosion, and allows a level driveway to be built above or below it.

Drainage redirection. Walls that hold slopes adjacent to paved areas must be designed to handle the water that the wall concentrates. A wall without adequate drainage creates hydrostatic pressure that fails the wall — and that failure can undercut the adjacent pavement.

Landscape and yard elevation changes. Properties that have raised landscape beds or terraced yards often need retaining walls to separate planted areas from paved surfaces cleanly.

Materials for Virginia Retaining Walls

Concrete block (segmental retaining wall): The most common residential retaining wall in Virginia. Engineered wall systems like Allan Block, Versa-Lok, and similar products are designed for specific height and loading conditions. Walls over 4 feet in height typically require a geogrid reinforcement layer and may require engineering review under Virginia building code.

Poured concrete: Used for commercial and higher-load applications. More expensive than block but allows custom shapes and integrated drainage.

Natural stone: Dry-laid fieldstone or mortared rubble stone walls — common in historic Virginia properties and rural estates. Lower load capacity than engineered walls but highly durable when properly built.

Timber: Pressure-treated timber walls are economical for landscape applications but are not recommended adjacent to paved surfaces — they deteriorate faster under soil and drainage exposure.

Patios and Outdoor Concrete Work

Concrete patios, steps, and outdoor surfaces near the house should be designed with the same care as driveway drainage:

  • Grade away from the foundation: All outdoor concrete should slope away from the house at a minimum 1/4 inch per foot
  • Expansion joints: Patios larger than 10 feet in either dimension need control joints to prevent random cracking
  • Connection to walkways: Transitions from concrete patio to asphalt driveway should be smooth and drained
