Virginia's climate has a clear best window for asphalt paving. Here is when to schedule your driveway or parking lot for the best results — and what months to avoid.

The best months to pave an asphalt driveway in Virginia are April through October. The sweet spots are late spring (April–June) and early fall (September–October). Mid-summer works fine but is the busiest period and heat can complicate certain aspects of the work.

Why Temperature Matters for Asphalt Paving
Hot-mix asphalt (HMA) — the material used for residential driveways and commercial lots — is produced at 275 to 325°F and must be compacted above a minimum temperature (typically 185°F for most Virginia mixes) before it cools. If the air temperature is too cold, the asphalt cools too fast, the rollers cannot achieve proper compaction, and voids remain in the mat — leading to early failure.
Virginia paving contractors generally will not lay asphalt when ambient temperatures are below 40°F and falling. Most avoid paving when overnight temperatures are forecast to drop below 35°F within 24 hours of placement.
Month-by-Month Guide for Virginia
January–February: Avoid
Temperatures across Central Virginia regularly drop into the mid-20s to low 30s. HMA cannot be properly placed and compacted in these conditions. Most plants reduce production; scheduling is also difficult.
March: Borderline
Late March can work in warm years — temperatures in the 45 to 55°F range with no frost forecast. Many contractors begin scheduling March paving on a weather-hold basis. Henrico and Chesterfield County residents see March starts more often than northern Virginia or mountain areas.
April–May: Excellent
Warm days, moderate humidity, manageable contractor schedules. This is an excellent window. If you want spring-installed asphalt, book your project in February or March — the schedule fills fast.
June–August: Good, With Caveats
Temperatures support great asphalt compaction and cure. However, Virginia summers bring afternoon thunderstorms that can delay work. Good contractors monitor radar and work mornings. The absolute heat of July and August means the mat stays workable longer, which is actually an advantage for large commercial jobs.
September–October: Excellent
Often the best scheduling window of the year. Summer heat has passed, storm frequency drops, and crews and plants are operating at full efficiency. September and October also tend to have slightly faster contractor scheduling than spring.
November: Borderline
Early November can work in most of Virginia, particularly south of Richmond. Later in the month, the freeze risk increases, and most contractors prefer to close out projects rather than start new ones.
December: Avoid (Most Years)
Cold enough in Central Virginia to prevent proper compaction and cure. Exceptions exist during warm spells, but they are the exception.
Can Asphalt Be Paved in Winter?
Technically yes — there are specialty warm-mix additives and practices for winter paving — but residential driveways and standard commercial lots are not candidates. Leave winter paving to emergency utility restoration and highway maintenance crews with the right equipment.
