Asphalt Crack Types Explained: Causes, Severity, and Repairs

Not all asphalt cracks are the same. This guide covers every crack type common in Virginia, what caused it, and the right repair — from simple filling to full reconstruction.

Why Identifying the Crack Type Matters

The wrong repair makes things worse. Filling a crack over a failed base delays — and increases — the eventual cost. Reconstructing a driveway when only the surface is cracked wastes money. Knowing what you are looking at determines the right treatment.

Hairline Cracks (Less Than 1/4 Inch)

Cause: Normal thermal expansion and contraction as Virginia temperatures swing from below freezing in January to 95°F in August. Surface oxidation makes the asphalt less flexible over time, leading to shrinkage cracking.

Severity: Low if addressed early. High if ignored — water enters and widens them rapidly.

Repair: Hot-pour rubberized crack filler or liquid crack sealer. Sealcoating after filling locks in the repair.

Longitudinal Cracks (Running Parallel to Traffic Direction)

Cause: Joint failure between paving lanes, thermal contraction, or shrinkage along the edge of the pavement.

Severity: Moderate to high depending on width. Edge longitudinal cracks are often the first sign of base erosion beneath the shoulder.

Repair: Crack filling if width is under 1 inch. Saw-and-seal with backer rod for wider joint cracks. Address any base erosion before filling.

Transverse Cracks (Running Perpendicular to Traffic)

Cause: Thermal contraction, reflective cracking over a concrete base underneath, or joints in the original sub-base migrating upward.

Severity: Moderate. These tend to be stable but allow water infiltration.

Repair: Hot-pour filling. If reflective cracking over concrete is the cause, a stress-absorbing membrane interlayer may be needed before overlay.

Alligator Cracking (Interconnected Block Pattern)

Cause: Base failure. The asphalt surface is flexing more than it was designed to because the aggregate base is no longer supporting it — usually due to water saturation, insufficient original compaction, or overloading.

Severity: High. This is not a surface issue.

Repair: Remove the failed asphalt, re-grade and compact the base, and repave. Filling alligator cracking is cosmetic and temporary at best.

Edge Cracking

Cause: Lack of lateral support at the pavement edge. Occurs when the shoulder material has eroded, when there is no curb or edging, or when water has undermined the base along the edge.

Severity: High if the edge is active — meaning the crack is growing and the shoulder continues to drop away.

Repair: Address drainage and edge support first. Add shoulder material and compact before paving over the edge area.

Pothole Formation

Cause: Water-weakened base beneath alligator cracking. Traffic load punches through the softened asphalt, removing chunks of surface.

Severity: High. Active potholes damage vehicles and create liability.

Repair: Remove all loose material, clean the edges to solid asphalt, tack coat, fill with hot-mix asphalt, and compact. Cold-pour bag patching is temporary and fails quickly.

Block Cracking

Cause: Binder aging and surface shrinkage across large panel areas. Common in older surfaces that have not been sealcoated.

Severity: Moderate. The base may still be sound.

Repair: If the base is good, a thorough crack-fill followed by sealcoating can stabilize the surface for several more years. If widespread and severe, thin overlay is often more cost-effective.
